Choosing glass by thickness sounds simple until the fabricator asks, “4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 12 mm, toughened or laminated?” The right answer depends on where the glass will be used, how large the panel is, what load it will take, and how safe it needs to be if it breaks.


In India, glass sheets are widely available in a range of standard thicknesses, from very thin picture-frame glass to heavy structural panels used in railings, shopfronts, partitions, shelves, and tabletops. This guide explains the common options, where each one is used, and how to choose without overpaying or under-specifying.

Common glass sheet thicknesses available in India


Most glass dealers, fabricators, and hardware suppliers in India stock common thicknesses in millimetres. Availability can vary by city, brand, and glass type, but the range below covers what is usually found in residential and commercial work.

These are nominal thicknesses. Actual thickness can vary slightly due to manufacturing tolerance. For most home and shop projects, that small variation is normal. For engineered applications such as railings, skylights, floors, or large external façades, the specification should come from a qualified designer, architect, or structural engineer.


Thin glass sheets from 2 mm to 5 mm


Thin glass is common in low-load applications. It is easy to cut, lighter to handle, and usually cheaper than thicker sheets. It is also more fragile, so it should be used only where the risk of impact is low.


2 mm and 3 mm glass


These thicknesses are mostly used for:


  • Photo frames

  • Small art frames

  • Light display covers

  • Decorative craft projects

  • Small cabinet inserts with full support


For frames, 2 mm or 3 mm glass is often enough because the panel is small and fully supported by the frame. It should not be used for doors, open shelves, large windows, tabletops, or any area where someone may lean, push, or knock against it.


Acrylic is sometimes chosen instead of thin glass for children’s rooms or frequently handled frames because it is lighter and less likely to shatter.


4 mm and 5 mm glass


4 mm and 5 mm glass are common in Indian homes, especially for framed windows and small panels. They are stronger than 2 mm or 3 mm sheets but still need proper support.

  • Internal ventilators

For windows, the panel size matters. A small framed window may work well with 4 mm glass. A larger sliding window may need 5 mm or 6 mm, especially in higher floors or windy areas.


Medium glass sheets from 6 mm to 10 mm


This is the most useful range for modern homes, shops, restaurants, clinics, and showrooms. It gives better strength and a cleaner look, especially in semi-frameless and frameless designs.

6 mm glass


6 mm glass is one of the most widely used thicknesses in India. It balances cost, strength, weight, and availability.


It is often used for:


  • Residential windows

  • Framed glass doors

  • Internal partitions

  • Small tabletops with full base support

  • Balcony screens where framed and properly supported

  • Mirror panels


For doors and partitions, 6 mm toughened glass is generally preferred over ordinary annealed glass because toughened glass is stronger and breaks into small granules rather than large sharp pieces.


8 mm glass


8 mm glass is common for frameless and semi-frameless work. It feels more solid than 6 mm and handles larger panels better when specified correctly.

  • Glass partitions

For shower areas, toughened glass is the usual choice. It can handle daily use, cleaning, and temperature changes better than normal glass. Edges should be polished, and hardware should match the glass thickness.


10 mm glass


10 mm glass is often used when the design needs a stronger, heavier, and more premium feel.

For 10 mm and above, handling and hardware become more serious. Hinges, clamps, channels, patch fittings, and floor springs must suit the sheet weight. A large 10 mm panel can be heavy, so installation should be done by trained glass workers.


Thick glass sheets from 12 mm to 19 mm


Thicker glass is used when strength, appearance, and span matter. It is also more expensive, heavier, and harder to cut and handle. Once the thickness crosses 12 mm, glass should not be selected only by guesswork.

12 mm glass


12 mm glass is common for:


  • Large tabletops

  • Heavy shelves

  • Premium partitions

  • Shop counters

A 12 mm tabletop can look elegant, especially with bevelled or polished edges. If the tabletop is not fully supported, span, overhang, and expected load must be checked carefully. A long unsupported sheet can still crack if used poorly.


15 mm glass


15 mm glass is used for higher-end interiors and heavy-duty applications, especially where a thick edge is part of the look.


It may be used for:


  • Large coffee tables

  • Dining tables

  • Display shelves

This thickness is less common than 12 mm, but many larger dealers and fabricators can arrange it.


19 mm glass


19 mm glass is a speciality thickness. It is used where the design calls for a very thick, heavy, luxury appearance or where the load demands it.

  • Heavy dining tabletops

  • High-end counters

  • Feature shelves

  • Large display units


Because 19 mm glass is extremely heavy, transport, lifting, edge polishing, and installation need planning. The base must be level and strong. If the glass rests on point supports, the design must be checked properly.


Toughened, laminated, and annealed glass affect thickness choice


Thickness alone does not tell the full story. A 10 mm ordinary glass sheet and a 10 mm toughened glass sheet behave differently. The same is true for laminated glass.


Annealed glass


Annealed glass is standard float glass. It is easy to cut and widely available. It breaks into sharp pieces, so it is not suitable for many safety-sensitive areas.


Use it for low-risk, fully framed applications such as small windows, picture frames, mirrors, and decorative panels.


Toughened glass


Toughened glass, also called tempered glass, is heat-treated after cutting and edge finishing. It is much stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness.


Common toughened glass thicknesses in India include:

  • 12 mm

  • 15 mm


Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after tempering. All holes, notches, edge shapes, and sizes must be final before processing. This is why site measurements must be accurate.

Laminated glass


Laminated glass has two or more layers bonded with an interlayer, often PVB or a similar material. When it breaks, the pieces tend to remain stuck to the interlayer, which improves safety.


You may see laminated thicknesses such as:


  • 6.38 mm

  • 8.38 mm

  • 10.38 mm

  • 12.38 mm


The decimal usually comes from the interlayer thickness. Laminated glass is used for skylights, canopies, railings, acoustic glazing, security glazing, and areas where glass fallout would be dangerous.


For balconies, railings, overhead panels, and structural glazing, laminated toughened glass is often preferred, but the exact makeup should be specified by an expert.


How to choose the right glass thickness


The best thickness depends on use, size, support, safety, and budget. A small panel can use thinner glass. A large frameless panel needs more strength and better hardware.

Check the panel size


Glass strength changes sharply with panel size. A 6 mm sheet that works in a small window may not suit a much larger opening. Wider spans need thicker glass or better framing.


Always give the fabricator the exact width, height, support type, and use. A good fabricator will ask these questions before recommending thickness.


Think about edge finish


Edges matter, especially for exposed glass. Common edge finishes include:


  • Flat polished edge

  • Pencil polished edge

  • Bevelled edge

  • Ground edge

  • Seamed edge


For frameless work, polished edges are safer and better looking. For glass inside a frame, basic edge finishing may be enough. Toughened glass needs edge work before tempering.

For example, a hinge meant for 8 mm glass should not be casually used with 12 mm glass. The weight and grip change. Poor hardware selection can lead to cracks, slipping, or unsafe movement.

The thickness available also depends on the type of glass ordered. Not every finish comes in every thickness at every shop.


Clear float glass


Clear float glass is the base product and is available in the widest range, from thin 2 mm sheets to thick 19 mm sheets. It is used for windows, interiors, furniture, and processing into toughened or laminated glass.


Tinted glass


Tinted glass is commonly available in shades such as grey, bronze, blue, or green. It is used for windows, partitions, tabletops, and decorative panels. Common thicknesses include 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, and 12 mm, depending on stock.


Frosted or acid-etched glass


Frosted glass gives privacy while allowing light. It is used in bathrooms, partitions, doors, and cabinets. It is commonly available around 4 mm to 12 mm, depending on whether it is processed from clear glass or bought as a finished sheet.


Mirror glass


Mirror glass is often available in 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm. For wardrobes and wall mirrors, 5 mm or 6 mm is common because it feels stronger and gives a flatter reflection when installed well.


Patterned glass


Patterned glass is used for privacy windows, cabinets, doors, and decorative panels. It is usually found in thinner to medium thicknesses, often around 4 mm to 6 mm, though availability varies by pattern.

Buying tips for glass sheets in India


A few checks can prevent costly mistakes.


Ask for the glass type, not only the thickness. Say “8 mm toughened glass” or “10.38 mm laminated glass,” not just “8 mm glass”.


Share the exact use. A tabletop, shower partition, and railing may all use thick glass, but the safety needs are different.


Confirm processing details before ordering:


  • Cut size

  • Edge polish

  • Holes and cut-outs

  • Toughening

  • Lamination

  • Tint or finish

  • Hardware compatibility

  • Delivery and installation method


Check for visible defects before installation. Look for scratches, chips, corner damage, bubbles in laminated glass, and uneven edge finishing.


For large sheets, plan access. Staircases, lifts, corridors, and site openings can limit what size sheet can be delivered. Sometimes it is better to divide a design into two panels.


A simple way to decide


For basic framed work, 4 mm to 6 mm glass is usually the practical range. For modern frameless interiors, 8 mm to 12 mm is common. For heavy furniture and premium panels, 12 mm to 19 mm may be used.


The safest rule is simple: choose thickness by application, not by appearance alone. If people will lean on it, walk under it, sit near it, or use it daily, safety glass and proper installation matter as much as thickness.
